The Friends Book Sale Program

What is the Friends Book Sale Program?

The Friends Book Sale Program is a simple, free, no-obligation program that enables libraries and other non-profit institutions to easily and profitably sell their discard or donated books and other media on the Internet.

How much does it cost to participate?

Nothing!  We provide the boxes and return UPS shipping labels for free!  There are no sign-up, monthly or membership fees to worry about.  Just send us your books and other media, and we will send you a monthly check for your sales!

How much will I make?

The Friends Book Sale Program payment schedule is simple and clear:  You will receive 30% of the proceeds from the sale of your books and other media!  The only expense item that is deducted from the customer sales price is the Internet marketplace’s commission fee on the sale.

For example, Amazon charges a 15% commission on all sales.  So a book that sells for $100 on Amazon would earn you 30% x $85 ($100 less Amazon’s $15 commission) = $25.50!  Compare that to the $1 or $2 you would have received at an on-site library book sale!

Do you have any bonus programs?

Yes!  We have two bonus programs:

$20 Sign Up Bonus

When you sign up for the Friends Book Sale program, we will automatically credit your account with a $20 bonus when we receive your first five boxes of saleable media. You get $20 before your first book even sells!

GLA and FOGL Bonus Program

If you are located in the state of Georgia, we have a special bonus program for members of the Georgia Library Association and the Friends of Georgia Libraries. Just follow these simple instructions, and you will receive 35% of the proceeds (a 5% bonus) from the sale of your media:

  1. Make sure your membership in either the Georgia Library Association or the Friends of Georgia Libraries is current (any level of membership is acceptable).

  2. Contact Friends Book Sale when you have collected a significant quantity of books or other materials and we will come to your location, sort/screen your items, and transport them back to our office for processing.

How often will I get paid?

Every month, Friends Book Sale will mail you a statement showing all of your currently listed media items and all of your sales completed during the prior month.  We will also mail you a check for your earnings that month, with no minimum and no month-to-month earnings hold-overs!

How does shipping work?

When you sign up for the Friends Book Sale Program, we will send you an initial supply of 5 corrugated boxes (18" x 12" x 12").  All you have to do is:

  • Pack the supplied boxes with any accepted media (books, CDs, DVDs, Books-on-Tape, etc.) from the list below.

  • When you sign up, we will provide you with access to a secure UPS web site from which you can print pre-paid UPS shipping labels and request a UPS pickup for shipping to Friends Book Sale.

  • Sit back and wait for your monthly sales checks to arrive!

Once we receive a shipment of 5 boxes from you, we will automatically send you another 5 boxes (or more if you request it).  It’s that easy!

What types of media are accepted?

Friends Book Sale will not accept materials that have been “picked over” or are rejects or leftovers from on-site library book sales.  You obviously get the greatest benefit from the Friends Book Sale Program by sending us your better items.  We gladly accept all of the following media types in either new, like-new or gently used condition:

What types of media sell for high value?

The following is a list of helpful hints for selecting the items that will sell for the highest value:

  • In books, we are primarily looking for "non-popular" non-fiction.
  • Popular books (fiction and non-fiction) are almost always worthless, unless it is a current best seller. If you have a current best seller, it still has value.  Last year’s or last decade’s best seller is guaranteed to be worthless.
  • "Old" books are generally very difficult to sell because there is a very small market for them.  We generally do not accept books published before 1975.  If the book does not have an ISBN, we are generally not interested in it. If you think you have an older gem, please contact us first to see if we are interested.
  • In books, the more esoteric the subject, the better.
  • In CDs, classical, jazz, foreign labels and indie bands tend to be valuable.
  • In DVDs, current releases, independent and foreign studio titles do well.
  • In VHS tapes, anything not available in DVD format can be valuable.
  • University press, small press, criticism, monographs and other scholarly books are great.
  • African-American studies, genealogy, golf, military, woodworking, needle work, gardening, hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, specialty cookbooks, antiques, collectables, furniture, doll-making and other unusual “hobby” topic books are great.
  • Fantasy titles and manga (Japanese-style cartoons) are often quite good.
  • Religion and spirituality (especially new age and occult) books can be valuable.
  • Any technical book, such as architecture, engineering, forestry, agriculture, medicine, mathematics and chemistry can be very good.
  • Textbooks tend to lose their value quickly, and become almost worthless if a newer edition has been published.
  • Books-on-tape, Books-on-CD and Large Print editions hold their value long after the regular print edition has become worthless.
  • Reference books can be very good. Please do not send general knowledge encyclopedias or English-only dictionaries. Foreign language-to-English dictionaries, bibliographic sources, dictionaries on esoteric subjects (like music, engineering, botany, etc.), specialty encyclopedias, foreign language sources, and other reference works can all be very valuable.
  • Anything “unusual” is good.  Most “common” titles are worthless, regardless of format (book, CD, DVD, etc.).

Do I have to pre-sort the material I send?

No!  Just pack our boxes full of acceptable media, and we will take it from there.

What happens to unacceptable or unsold books?

Books that do not meet our selling criteria, or are not sold within a reasonable period of time (normally 1 year) are either donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Atlanta, Georgia or are appropriately recycled.  No book that we receive will ever find its way into a landfill.
